York Entrepreneur Unveils New Mobility Tricycle
![Jorvik Freedom]()
Jorvik Freedom
A York-based company, Jorvik Tricycles, has expanded its business into the specialist mobility sector with the introduction of a new hybrid electric tricycle model.
The new product, named the Jorvik Freedom, is designed to serve as a cross between a standard recumbent tricycle, an electric bike, and a mobility scooter. The launch marks a shift for the company, which was founded in 2014 and has developed a business with reported annual revenues of approximately £6 million.
The Jorvik Freedom is aimed at individuals who require more stability and support than a conventional bicycle or electric tricycle but may wish to avoid a traditional mobility scooter. The product launch is designed to offer an alternative to traditional devices, amid widespread reports that many users feel a social stigma attached to mobility scooters.
Built on 10 years of customer insight, the three-in-one tricycle boasts a low centre of gravity for improved stability and balance. It is equipped with 16-inch tyres, two air springs, and a rear-drive Bafang motor. Powered by a 48-volt battery, this combination of features allows the model to be used on both paved roads and off-road paths, offering versatility for users with mobility challenges and enabling longer journeys. The model is priced at £4,499 and is disability VAT exempt.
James Walker, Founder and Managing Director of Jorvik Tricycles, stated that the design was influenced directly by customer feedback. "Our new Jorvik Freedom model has been designed with our customer feedback in mind. Whilst the business has grown over the last 10 years, so has our knowledge of the industry," said Mr Walker.
He noted a clear demand from customers who were "looking for more supportive options and particularly those who weren't ready to forgo the style and ease of a tricycle for a mobility scooter".
Mr Walker added that the low centre of gravity is a key feature, making the Jorvik Freedom "an ideal option for those looking for a bit more support. At Jorvik Tricycles, we support our customers in every stage of their mobility and are on a mission to continuously push boundaries to make cycling accessible for all”.
In addition to the new launch, Jorvik Tricycles has introduced a bespoke de-restriction service for its products, which provides less mobile users with the throttle power necessary to manage steep inclines without excessive physical effort.
