Why Nature Is The Next Big Risk For Global Supply Chains

A scientist from Leeds-based Tunley Environmental is set to address a growing priority for corporate boardrooms: how to measure and report a business’s impact on biodiversity and the natural world.

Dr Tara Garraty, the environmental consultancy’s Biodiversity Lead and Senior Scientist, will be a keynote speaker at an upcoming webinar hosted by Applied Ecological Resources (AER), part of the British Ecological Society.

The session, titled "Biodiversity and Nature Reporting for Complex Global Supply Chains," will take place on 15 October 2025. It comes as the loss of biodiversity is increasingly recognised not just as an ecological issue, but as a substantial business risk.

Companies globally face mounting pressure from investors and regulators to assess their dependence on nature—such as clean water or stable climate—and transparently report their impact on it. The event will explore the rapidly changing landscape of this disclosure, including new frameworks designed to integrate nature into financial reporting, such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN), and the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

The challenge is especially acute for companies with complex international operations, where tracing environmental impact across every tier of a supply chain is notoriously difficult.

She will be joined by Benedicta Bakpa, Head of ESG at pharmaceutical company Bespak, who will offer an industry perspective on embedding biodiversity goals into corporate sustainability strategies.

Dr Garraty expressed optimism about the progress being made, stating: "I’m looking forward to sharing how businesses can turn complex biodiversity data into clear, practical actions. We’re already seeing real progress, like in our collaboration with Bespak, where companies are taking meaningful steps to protect nature and build resilient supply chains."

The free webinar is aimed at environmental and sustainability professionals, as well as supply chain specialists looking to better understand the emerging role of nature reporting in shaping a 'nature-positive' future.
