Dogs on the smallholding are essential. I have four dogs; two border collies and two border terriers and whilst they are all predominantly pets, they also have important jobs to do. Aside from the obvious job of guarding the smallholding - trust me no-one can get within an inch of our property without all four of them barking their heads off, they also have other jobs to do that help enormously around the smallholding.
Basil and Barney, my two border terriers are excellent ratters. Bred to hunt, they are feisty and headstrong with a cheeky and entertaining personality. Both my borders are extremely curious and they love to explore. They are very loyal dogs but also completely fearless so they never think twice before bounding head first into a stack of hay bales or through a fence, in pursuit of a rat, mouse or even a hare. Needless to say, the barn and feed store are kept well clear of pests when the dogs are on the prowl!

Watson and Holmes, my two border collies couldn’t be more different to Basil and Barney if they tried. Although much larger in size they most certainly do not have the determination or bravado of their ‘brothers’. Watson has however, mastered the skill of chasing and often catching rats - he has been around the terriers long enough to perfect cornering and pouncing on vermin and all three are a force to be reckoned with when they have a rat within their sights.
Holmes is out on his own when it comes to partaking in vermin control. Although he will try to help he really hasn’t got what it takes and is often seen running in the opposite direction to the rat when it finally does show its face! In his defence, Holmes is deaf and partially sighted however, this does not hold him back when it comes to other activities. He can sniff out a hedgehog in no time at all and sits and watches these beautiful creatures without disturbing or upsetting them. He is also adept at rounding up his little flock of sheep. Although he has never been formally trained, he instinctively drops to his haunches as they pass by him and he spends hours watching over them.

Having four dogs isn’t always easy. Although they have lots of land to roam around on and get on well with each other, I consider it very important that each dog has their own individual time and I try to take each one out on their own as much as possible. Usually I set aside a day trip with just one dog each week. This might be a visit to the coast or a pub lunch in a village coupled with a long walk. Despite having the smallholding to explore, the dogs are taken on a good walk every evening. It is vital that dogs are given the opportunity to explore new places and that their curiosity is allowed to flourish.
Dogs give us so much and ask for nothing in return therefore it is essential that we look after them in every way we can. They really are man’s best friend!
