Boredom Busting

I often try to think of ways to entertain my ponies and donkeys. I do this for several reasons.

Regardless of what some people might think, equines do get bored.
Constant grazing is not ideal for their sugar intake or, ultimately, their weight.
Equines that do not ‘work’ can quickly get overweight if not exercised regularly.

Whilst horses can get regular exercise from being ridden, having miniature equines can have drawbacks when it comes to finding ways to exercise them, so we have to be a little more creative!

There are many stable toys and equipment on the market, but again, many of these items are made with standard horses in mind and not minis, so careful selection is essential. Hay ball feeders often have holes large enough for a miniature pony or donkey to get their feet stuck, so you must do your homework and select the right products.

I have found some great companies that sell items specifically for miniature ponies and donkeys, and their products are going down well here on the smallholding.

Ruggles sells a wide range of stable toys, balls, and slow feeders where ponies and donkeys have to work for their treats. I absolutely love that they target their goods around the size of the equine, for example, miniature, standard, and heavy horses, to help you choose the right product.

They also sell incredible turnout rugs, stable rugs, fly rugs, and summer sheets in various sizes to suit both standard and minis.

Another good boredom-busting activity for both the donkeys and the ponies is mini jumps. Whilst I know my little minis won’t be entering the show ring anytime soon, getting them to enjoy exercise and have fun is the perfect way to keep them fit and healthy and regular readers of my column will know that this year has been somewhat challenging for the ponies who have succumbed to laminitis. Hence, it is great to see them galloping around the sand arena, enjoying their mini jumps!
