Sara Williamson from Wakefield was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at age 46. This year is a significant milestone, as she was given a 20 per cent chance of living 10 years if she could complete treatment. Unfortunately, treatment was halted several times due to heart failure. Today she celebrates her 10-year cancerversary. She is on medication for life, and there’s not a year when she doesn’t have surgery to deal with some of those side effects. She always says positively that there’s a lot more life to live yet. Due to her experience, she founded the support services in 2017 and is well connected with healthcare professionals at local hospitals.
The charity “My Breast Cancer Support” are extremely proud to have collaborated with “The Dance Studio Leeds” over the past few years. The venue takes positive action to provide fabulous vibes to improve mental and physical health. It is an inclusive space for all ages, genders and ethnicities and offers a warm welcome for our cancer patients.
A breast cancer diagnosis can lead to loss of hair and eyebrows, facing mental and physical scars and the repetition of constant treatments, side effects and appointments. As a charity, they pick up where the NHS leaves off by providing drop-in services, holistic therapies, dancing, restorative Pilates, wellness days/retreats, walks, and social events. There’s also a closed online forum. DSL continues our vision and fosters unfailing energy to make a difference. Classes run on a Thursday evening, with free car parking and accessible facilities.
Funding is scarce, and it is trying times for charities. Katie Geddes established the studios in 2009 and hosts an annual celebration of dance event at Leeds City College. Patients were empowered to take part. Exercise is proven to reduce the risk of recurrence. Regaining movement and independence is manifested through music that encourages cognitive improvement to mask the side effects of treatment.
Sara Williamson from Wakefield (founder and chair) says that she is eternally grateful for the fabulous donation of £3705.17 raised from the dance event. This will ensure that dance and holistic therapies continue at the Dance Studio Leeds throughout 2026 and at venues in Wakefield. Everyone is focused on living longer and positive lives. It could not come at a better time in celebration of World Cancer Day. Movement is a fabulous form of expression when communicating about a cancer diagnosis is difficult.
Sara says to anyone who is thinking about stepping out of their comfort zone, it’s worth booking a beginner’s class. There’s something for everyone, and it’s a great way to get fitter. There’s no competition or designer gear. We also cater for educational workshops, teambuilding, and celebrations.
