As mid-September approaches and the nights grow longer and darker, a flurry of sparring action continues to illuminate the weekdays. Each of these events is poised to dazzle neutral fans and tantalise those who are invested.

Monday 14th September Premier League: Leeds United v Newcastle United 20:00

Elland Road is ready to come alive once more for the second outing of the season at the famous ground as Newcastle travel south in hopes of ending the White’s unbeaten league run and continuing theirs.

Leeds have only lost one of their last 12 matches in the Premier League, making them one of the top-flight teams in the league. It was not a happy trip down to Stamford Bridge in the League Cup last midweek, though.

Despite going two-nil up before the 50-minute mark, Chelsea made a remarkable comeback in a bizarre turn of events that saw Cole Palmer bag two and Pedro Neto score, all within seven minutes, to go 3-2 up. A flurry of goals from each side set up an unpredictable finish in which Chelsea ran out 6-3 winners.

Now that Farke's men are out of the cup, they can focus on the league, where they have been more successful. One win and two draws from their three Premier League matches have them in 11th and looking to proceed with their good run.

Newcastle are level on points with Leeds but sit one place above them with a superior goal difference. Their last match in the Premier League saw them play out a dramatic 2-2 draw where Jacob Ramsay scored a last-gasp equaliser for The Magpies.

The Geordies had to wait until late in the match to secure a victory over Millwall in the cup, with a goal from Willock in the 81st minute making the difference and boosting their confidence ahead of the upcoming meeting with Leeds.

Tuesday 15th September EFL Championship: Middlesbrough v Millwall 19:45

To the Championship now, where Middlesbrough look to take the top spot with a win over a Millwall side that is hoping to kick back into gear.

Boro have had a strong start to the season, with one loss, one draw, and four wins in six matches. This tally places them in fourth place with 13 points, just one point behind West Ham, who are currently in first place.

They are four matches without a loss after a 2-1 loss to Blackburn in late August, setting a fire under them, as since then just a draw to Burnley has been the only dropped points, with a 1-0 win to QPR and a dramatic 4-3 win over Norwich at the weekend where a 91st-minute Phillips goal brought the three points to Teesside.

Millwall started the season well, with two wins over Bristol City and Norwich City, having many thinking they will replicate their playoff campaign of last season.

Since then, though, they have only managed one win in five and have been losing far too many games if they are to get back into the top six. A devastating 5-1 loss to Southampton After suffering a devastating 5-1 loss to Southampton, they faced another damning 3-0 defeat against Wrexham. by another damning 3-0 loss to Wrexham.

It was back to losing ways at the weekend too, as a trip to Lancashire left them with no rewards after being beaten 3-1 by Blackburn.

Their lacklustre performances have left them in 13th place with nine points and in need of an uptick. A victory against Boro could provide the necessary momentum for them to progress, but last year's playoff finalists will pose a significant challenge, particularly given their motivation and confidence to ascend to the top of the league.

Wednesday 16th September EFL Cup: Fleetwood Town v Sheffield United 19:45

The League Cup continues on Wednesday with a potential giant killing on the cards as Sheffield United travel to the northwest coast to face League Two Fleetwood Town.

The Blades have had a disappointing start to their league campaign, with just two wins from their opening seven matches and just nine points, which has them sitting 14th in the Championship.

Last weekend, they suffered a bitter loss as a draw seemed likely against newly relegated Wolves. Instead, Mexico number 9 Raul Jimenez drew a dagger to the Blades' heart with a last-minute winner.

They have fared better in the EFL Cup, with a 3-0 demolition on Mansfield in the first round being followed by a less routine 2-1 win over championship side Blackburn.

Fleetwood have made a more positive start to the season with an unbeaten record. Eight matches without defeat is a stellar record, and it has put them in seventh in League Two, just two points off Barnet at the top of the table.

They are yet to concede on the EFL Cup too, with a 1-0 win over Chesterfield in the first round being followed by a 4-0 hammering of Shrewsbury.

Whilst both sides’ focus will be squarely on their respective league campaigns, there is no doubt that a win in the cup will do wonders for confidence. The Blades are particularly in desperate need of a win to help them fight their way back up the table.
