WASPI Campaigners Launch Party Support Scorecard Ahead Of Crucial May Elections

WASPI CAMPAIGNERS have launched a fresh national lobbying tool in their quest for compensation, ahead of a crucial set of elections on Thursday 7 May.

The new party support scorecard, covering the largest parties in England, Scotland and Wales, sets out respective parties’ commitments to compensating WASPI women.

The tool also indicates whether backbench MPs in Westminster are supportive of the campaign.

The Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party, Greens and Plaid Cymru are all identified as strongly supportive of WASPI women, with their party leaders openly backing compensation.

Despite large numbers of Labour and Conservative MPs also pledging their support, the scorecard highlights that both Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch have dodged calls to compensate affected women.

In addition, the scorecard also shows Nigel Farage has failed to publicly state his support for WASPI women, despite some Reform UK MPs previously backing the campaign.

Voters are being urged to raise WASPI on the doorstep and contact their local candidates to check whether they support the campaign.

Ahead of a crucial set of elections in just six weeks’ time, the SNP and Plaid Cymru’s support for 1950s-born women could boost their chances to win the most seats in both Holyrood and the Senedd.

Campaign chief Angela Madden said WASPI remains “a key issue on the doorstep”.

In spring 2024, the Parliamentary Ombudsman found the Department for Work and Pensions guilty of maladministration, ordering ministers to compensate more than 3.5 million affected women.

However, the Government has continued to reject calls for compensation, with ministers citing the complexities of delivering a financial redress scheme in an update to Parliament in January.

In March, campaigners announced they were preparing a pre-court action letter to Government lawyers which could see them return to the High Court for a second time.

Angela Madden, Chair of the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign, said:

“We know compensating WASPI women remains a key issue on the doorstep, not just amongst those affected, but for all those who believe in fairness and following the rulings of independent ombudsmen.

“The Parliamentary Ombudsman was unequivocal. The DWP failed these women, and they deserve compensation.

“Every candidate standing has an opportunity to stand on the right side of this injustice and to join our calls for fair compensation. We are calling on them to do exactly that.
