Top Japanese soloist Taiko performer Takuya Taniguchi and York’s own Tengu Taiko Drummers teamed up to bring us an exhilarating show of dynamic contemporary rhythms and traditional Japanese music.

From the dynamic opening number, Hyakki Yagyo (Night Parade of 100 Demons), composed by J. Hardwick/A. Plews and inspired by Japanese Yokai (ghosts and monsters) folklore, to the awesome final piece, Odaiko/Yatai (a big drum/cart drum), demonstrating strength, style, and stamina, we were treated to a breathtaking variety of skilful Taiko drumming pieces.

Furthermore, the show featured numerous captivating theatrical elements, such as a comedy-style sketch featuring the fool character Hyottoko, an enchanting Kasa (Umbrella) Dance, choreographed and performed by N Stretch and J Yau, and a dramatic appearance of a colourful giant dragon, accompanied by the music of Bushido drums by Gabriel Saban and Tian Bo.

The Tengu Taiko performing members were Jared Hardwick, Natalie Stretch, Jez Stretch, Caroline Montgomery, Leo Doehl, Glen Sears, Amelia Gully, Joanne Yau, Deby Ellenor, Nigel Ellenor, Jo Lam and Tolani Akakiu-Marquis, who all gave outstanding performances, earning a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of their amazing debut theatre show.

After an interval, Takuya Taniguchi – The Taiko-ist made a stylish entry onto the stage from the back of the hall and wowed us all with his stunning Taiko skills, clearly showing why he has the accolade of being feted as one of the very few best solo Taiko players in the world; it was such a privilege to see him perform on this, his first visit to York – each piece he played was exquisite.

Performing at many different events across the UK, from festivals, shows and Japan-themed events to private, corporate, charity and community events, Tengu Taiko Drummers share the joy of Taiko with all who see them perform; their energy and enthusiasm is infectious.
