TV Sales Skyrocket As England And Wales Fans Prepare To Watch World Cup From Home

Sales of televisions have skyrocketed ahead of the World Cup, according to latest data, as football fans look set to watch games from home.

Ahead of the Three Lions’ opening match on Monday 21st November, sales data indicates fans will be ditching the boozer in exchange for the sofa this year.

According to figures from online marketplace OnBuy, Brits have purchased televisions and TV equipment in their droves in recent weeks.

Sales of home cinema systems have surged by 1769% over the last seven days.

One of the marketplace’s top selling TV’s is the 55 inch Hisense SMART 4k Ultra HD - proving that football really is a game of inches!

A recent consumer survey* found 84% of fans planning to watch the World Cup intend to do it from the comfort of their own home.

Just 8% of people surveyed planned to watch the tournament in a pub or on a big screen.

According to the retail experts at OnBuy, the trend is partly a result of this year’s World Cup being staged in winter for the first time ever.

Liam Tickner, Electronics and Technology Category Manager at OnBuy, said:
“England and Wales fans would usually flock to busy beer gardens and fan zones.

“However, with this year's competition taking place in the middle of winter, many fans are opting to watch in the warm at home.

“We have seen this reflected in the sales. Fans want to watch the competition on the best quality TVs and home cinema systems they can.”

Some pubs have boycotted showing World Cup matches over concerns about the host nation Qatar.

The nation has been criticised for its position on same-sex relationships, its human rights record and treatment of migrant workers.
