Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 3rd January
Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.
From Friday 3rd January
Nosferatu (15)
A cinematic icon returns to chill your blood this year, as Robert Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthouse) writes and directs this frightening, ravishing and darkly gothic horror retelling of F.W. Murnau’s legendary landmark horror story. As a young couple encounter a great evil in the monstrous Count Orlock (Bill Skarsgard). Featuring the all star cast of Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Willem Dafoe, this acclaimed horror is already being called a New Year's treat, that is as impressionistic and artistic as it is brutal and frightening. This may already be a contender for best film of the (very new) year! You do not want to miss the slow burning atmospheric work of excellence that is Nosferatu, that could be - no easy feat - one of Eggers’ best films to date!
We Live in Time (15)
John Crowley's (Brooklyn) We Live In Time stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, in this romantic drama about a young couple, as we experience a decade in their lives together. Acclaimed for its central performances, this drama takes us on a journey through chance, love, happiness and even grief, in this adventure we call life.
From Wednesday 8th January
A Real Pain (15)
Written, directed by and starring Jesse Eisenberg, this buddy comedy drama is already drawing rave reviews and awards season conversation. The film follows two mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), as they tour Poland to honour their Jewish grandmother. Their adventure together becoming increasingly complicated as old tensions resurface, as they explore their family history. Funny, heartfelt and impactful, this incredible film is an early highlight to 2025.
Still Showing
Kraven The Hunter (15)
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is Kraven, the Spider-Man villain turned anti-hero in this thrilling, violent and pulse-pounding new entry into Sony's Spider-Man adjacent universe. The story sees Kraven turning the hunters into the hunted, using his animalistic heightened senses to bring down a variety of bad people, including his father (Russell Crowe). From director J. C. Chandor (All is Lost), Kraven is a violent burst of adrenaline for Sony's comic book Marvel world.
Mufasa: The Lion King (PG)
Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) directs this visionary prequel to 2019's The Lion King live-action adaptation, as we see the story of Simba's father play out in this tale of an orphan who would be king. Starring Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter alongside new cast members Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, and Blue Ivy Carter. Mufasa: The Lion King is a visually spectacular musical adventure as thematically and spiritually stirring as it is aesthetically thrilling.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (PG)
SEGA’s speedster returns in this third entry into the blockbusting video game adaptation series. The film sees Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) face their darkest and deadliest challenge yet in not only one Robotnik (Jim Carrey) but two!! As his dad Gerald Robotnik (Carrey also) are involved in a dastardly plot, as the vengeful Shadow (Keanu Reeves) seeks for the world to feel his pain. One of the most anticipated family films in years sees Carrey double the trouble, with joyous results, in his return from retirement that treats fans of the SEGA legend and the games themselves (as well as all other audiences) to a fast, action-packed and exhilarating adventure.
Better Man (15)
Michael Gracey’s eccentric biographical music drama is an entry in the genre unlike any other. Starring Robbie Williams, as he voices himself, telling the story of his life and career, that is equally as wild in and out of music but there’s a catch…he’s depicted as a monkey here! As he has never felt particularly evolved! Critically acclaimed a unique and breathtaking work of biopic cinema, Better Man may indeed be better than it's brethren.
