Goole-based engineering firm Salko UK has been named the Yorkshire, Humber, and North East ‘Family Business’ winner at the HSBC Small Business Awards.
The firm was recognised for its intergenerational leadership and the integration of family values into its commercial operations. Founded in 2000 by Dean Murphy, the company has remained family-owned for 25 years. The leadership team includes Murphy’s daughter, Georgina Wilkinson, who serves as Chief Financial Officer, and his son, Gary Murphy, who acts as Senior Electrical Lead.
The mechanical and electrical engineering specialist has deep roots in the North of England’s industrial landscape. Its earliest operations were at Hatfield Colliery in South Yorkshire, one of the final operational coal mines in the UK.
Since the decline of the coal industry, the firm has transitioned into modern energy and mining infrastructure. It provides technical solutions for high-profile UK projects, including the Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire—a major polyhalite fertiliser project—and Enfield Power Station.
Dean Murphy, CEO of Salko UK, said: “We’re pleased to have been recognised by such a big organisation for our commitment to family values. Our family ethos extends beyond our immediate family, fostering a work culture where employees feel valued and part of a larger family. This approach has enabled us to build a loyal and skilled workforce right here in Goole, providing stability and consistency through the ever-changing landscape of our industry.”

National finals
The regional ceremony was held at Oulton Hall in Leeds. As a category winner, Salko UK will now proceed to the national finals, held at the Savoy in London later this year.
The recognition comes at a significant time for the Humber region, which is currently undergoing a large-scale transition toward "Net Zero" industrial clusters. Engineering firms with heritage in traditional power generation are increasingly being tapped for their expertise in the UK’s evolving energy security strategy.
