As the leaves turn and the UK experiences its first crisp chill, the focus of daily life moves indoors. For many, this seasonal shift isn't a retreat from activity, but a move to indoor wellness. The colder weather doesn't just prompt a wardrobe change, but spurs the need for keeping well both physically and mentally during this season.
To mark National Spa Week, taking place from 3rd to 9th November, Paul Donkin the Audley Club Manager at Audley Scarcroft Park offers his tips on making wellness a lifestyle at any age, especially during the colder months:
1. Focus on little and often
You don't need a full day off to de-stress. Modern wellness is all about frequent, short bursts of relaxation that prevent stress build-up. Integrate five-minute "sensory check-ins" throughout your day. For instance, apply a rich, high-quality hand cream while taking three deep, calming breaths, or spend five minutes in a quiet, sunlit space with a warm, herbal tea. These small rituals elevate your everyday life and promote constant well-being.
2. Prioritise hydration
Skin health and vitality start from within. Many luxury spas now feature high-end water and juice bars. Move beyond plain water. Create a "Hydration Bar" at home with infused water (cucumber & mint, citrus slices, or berries) and enjoy nutrient-rich smoothies. Think of hydrating as a skin and joint treatment.
3. Low-impact, high-benefit movement
The wellness focus is shifting from strenuous workouts to movements that improve balance whilst supporting mental wellbeing. Seek out Chair Yoga, Gentle Tai Chi, or Aqua Aerobics. These activities are designed to be kind to joints while still boosting circulation and flexibility.
4. Socialise your wellness
Loneliness is now recognised as a major health risk. Don't enjoy your pampering alone. Turn simple self-care activities into social events. For example, hosting a "Walk & Talk" group that focuses on light exercise followed by a coffee or tea. Sharing the experience increases the mood-boosting benefits. If you live in a retirement village such as
Audley Villages /
Mayfield Villages, there are plenty of clubs and fitness classes like aqua fitness, walking groups and Rummikub on your door step that can help build connection with fellow homeowners, which benefit your mental and physical wellbeing and even help to discover a new hobby.
