Mount Tabor Holds ‘Big Community Clear Up’ With Paralympian Hannah Cockroft

Mount Tabor’s community came together yesterday to hold a ‘Big Community Clear Up’ around their hamlet with the aim to clean up their local area through an hour-long litter picking session.

Hannah Cockroft, a special guest and former local resident, joined the multi-generational event. With Panasonic's help, she has been campaigning for a greener planet alongside her success at the Paris Paralympics. The nine-time Paralympic gold medallist Said: “It makes me feel really proud to get to show off my area, but also I suppose to hopefully make people care a little bit more about it.”

“Over the years that I was training here, I just noticed more and more that when you’re in the race chair pushing up and down on the roads, you’re so close to the ground that all that rubbish is flying in your face.”

The 'Big Community Clear Up’ is only part of Mount Tabor’s community’s fight to improve their local environment, as they launched their community sustainability project at the event.

The community regularly tackles issues such as littering and fly-tipping within their area participating in monthly litter picks as they try to improve their environment for future generations.

On the importance of improving the environment’s sustainability for future generations, Cockroft said, “I’m actually so impressed with the amount of people that have turned up today, and the fact that the council have turned up and our councillor as well shows that it is a problem.”

“It's a problem that everyone is very aware of, and hopefully today is just the kickstart of something that in the future doesn’t have to take a lot of organising; it doesn’t have to be a big deal; it's just something that people work out of their doors and decide to do.”

The event was run in collaboration with Panasonic as the company looks to implement its ‘Panasonic Green ImpACT’ strategy within local communities.

As one of Team Panasonic’s Sustainability Ambassadors, Cockroft brought the Panasonic strategy to Mount Tabor in a bid to improve the environment in her childhood home.

Regarding the event and its role within the 'Panasonic Green ImpACT' strategy, Kathrin Schlangenfeldt, Manager, Sustainability & Environment Communication at Panasonic, stated: "Panasonic has always considered itself as a part of society, and it is very important for us to contribute to society."

“Our current environmental vision is called ‘Panasonic Green ImpACT’ that already includes the word ‘act,‘ which means that we take care of our own business and we are responsible for how we conduct our business, but we also go beyond that and we want to contribute to society too.”

After the event, both the local community in Mount Tabor and the multinational company Panasonic will continue to tackle environmental issues as the fight to improve the planet for future generations continues to become more prevalent.
