Havila 'Battery' Ship Beats Norwegian Eco Deadline

Havila Voyages’ two ‘electric’ cruise liners have sailed into the World Heritage fjord of Geirangerfjord, using battery power almost four years ahead of Norway’s tough CO2 deadline.

In less than four years, it will be a government requirement that all ships sailing into any Norwegian World Heritage fjord must do so entirely free of emissions.
That means no ship entering the Geirangerfjord will be able to emit a single gram of CO2.

However, Havila Capella and Havila Castor have already sailed emission free through the world heritage fjord this summer

Havila Castor’s Captain Bjørn Ivar Pedersen “The ripples we leave behind in the still water are so small you’d think they originated from a (smaller) boat with an outboard motor!
“We are already well ahead of schedule in terms of using battery power because we believe it’s so important to take care of nature. Indeed, we are in a position to do so”, said the captain.

“We have the world's largest battery pack for passenger ships on board,” he added, “and we want to use it in all places possible, not just the world heritage fjord”, said Pedersen.

The first of Havila Voyages new ships, Havila Capella, was awarded the prestigious "Next Generation Ship Award 2022".

The company claims to be the world's most eco-friendly shipping company for passenger cruise ships.
