Finca Martelo 2019: High-Altitude Rioja Delivers Classic Elegance With Modern Freshness

Finca Martelo, Rioja, 2019
If you love a Rioja that feels both classic and fresh, Finca Martelo 2019 is a real treat. It comes from the Torre de Oña estate in Rioja Alavesa, a beautiful old vineyard that sits high up at 630 metres.

The vines are more than 60 years old, mostly Tempranillo with a splash of Mazuelo, Garnacha, and even a little white grape (Viura) for extra lift.

2019 was an excellent year. The weather was kind, the grapes ripened slowly and evenly, and the winemakers could pick at just the right moment. The result is a wine with bright colour, silky texture, and enough structure to age for years, though it’s already drinking beautifully now.

On the nose, you’ll find cherries and a soft hint of marzipan. Take a sip and it comes alive with blackberries, cassis, pepper, and herbs. There’s richness, but also freshness, thanks to its vibrant acidity and smooth, chalky tannins. A touch of vanilla and spice from oak ageing rounds it out nicely, leading to a long, elegant finish.

This is a wine made to be enjoyed, whether you’re pairing it with a hearty stew, some cured meats, or simply sharing a bottle with friends. It’s Rioja at its best - generous, flavoursome, and just the right mix of power and grace.

Available at Majestic from £24 a bottle.
