Evri Invests £29m In Barnsley Sorting Hub

Evri, one of the UK’s largest dedicated parcel delivery companies, has announced a £29 million investment in operational enhancements at its largest sorting facility, or "super hub," in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The funding aims to significantly increase the hub’s processing capacity ahead of this year’s peak delivery period and drive further growth.

The investment will boost the overall capacity of the facility, which is already considered one of the largest parcel sorting hubs in Europe. Once the project is complete in August 2026, the upgraded hub will be able to process approximately 5.5 million parcels per week—a 31 per cent increase, or 1.3 million more than its current volume. Barnsley, situated in the industrial heartland of Northern England, is a strategically critical location for the company's national and international logistics network.

The investment is being delivered in two phases. The first phase, a £4 million spend, involves the launch of a new small-item sorter. This enhancement is crucial for supporting this year’s peak period operations and helps Evri build its nationwide daily capacity up to 4.4 million parcels. The second phase, which represents a £25 million investment, is already underway. This phase involves the installation of a third sorting tier within the existing building, with construction scheduled for completion in August 2026, in time to support the busy festive season that year.

This latest announcement follows recent corporate activity for the company, including the acquisition of Coll-8, an Irish customs clearance and logistics specialist, earlier this year, and a merger with DHL eCommerce UK which is due to complete imminently. The newly formed Evri Group will deliver over a billion parcels and a further one billion business letters annually.

Martijn De Lange, CEO of Evri Group, said: “Following a historic year for Evri, with our acquisition of Coll-8 in Ireland and our landmark merger with DHL, which is due to complete imminently, this latest investment into our state-of-the-art operation at Barnsley, cements our investment in the Yorkshire region and our ambition to be the UK’s premier parcel delivery business. It further underpins our continued growth as we will deliver more than a billion parcels and a billion letters a year globally.”

The company confirmed that the investment will create up to 300 new jobs at the Barnsley super hub by the end of 2026, adding to the more than 1,000 inaugural roles. Evri has a deep commitment to the Yorkshire region, and previously recruited over 80 per cent of its original staff from the local community.
