New research from Stagecoach shows that UK car commuters are spending an average of £2,228 per year – or £42.86 per week – on getting to work, as rising fuel prices, maintenance costs and parking charges continue to put pressure on household budgets.

More than half (55%) of drivers say the cost of commuting by car is increasing, while one in five (20%) now find it increasingly unaffordable. The research also highlights the impact on working lives, with 14% of commuters considering changing jobs to reduce travel costs.

Across Cumbria and Lancashire – including Carlisle, Kendal, Barrow-in-Furness, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Workington, Morecambe, Lancaster, Preston and Chorley – Stagecoach is encouraging customers to consider the bus as a cost-effective and more convenient alternative.

The findings show that commuters could save up to £1,139 per year by switching to bus travel, while also benefiting from a more relaxed and productive journey. A third (33%) of car commuters already believe they would save money by making the switch.

In addition to financial savings, bus travel can help reduce the stress associated with congestion, with many passengers using their journey time to relax, read or catch up on work.

Tom Waterhouse, Managing Director for Stagecoach Cumbria and Lancashire, said: “We know that many people across our region are feeling the pressure of rising everyday costs, and commuting can be a significant part of that.

“Bus travel offers a simple, affordable and reliable alternative, helping people save money while making better use of their time. Whether travelling into Carlisle, Lancaster or Preston, or connecting communities across Cumbria, our services are designed to support local people, businesses and the wider economy.

“We’re continuing to invest in our network to ensure we provide high-quality, dependable services that give customers a genuine choice in how they travel.”

With many employers requiring more office-based working, Stagecoach says the bus provides a practical solution to help manage commuting costs while supporting more sustainable travel choices.
