Janet Devlin has had quite the ride since she appeared as a 16-year-old on The X Factor. Having made it through to the quarter finals, within a couple of years she had released her folk-tinged debut album. While her releases were largely ignored by mainstream radio, she has crafted a career based on her honest originals and distinctive covers.
Having left the world of folk-pop to explore her true musical love, country, for her fourth studio album at the rear end of 2024, her radio fate changed. BBC Radio 2 finally noticed her lush vocals and fully engaged with her playful sound married to raw, driven lyrics, awarding her with long-overdue mainstream support. As a result, she landed her first-ever headline festival slot and announced a deluxe edition of the record to celebrate.
Not My First Emotional Rodeo is a 22-song-long extension of the original record, which boasted 13 absolutely killer country songs. The additional 9 are formed of 2 live covers and 7 new originals, crafting an album that is even more pure gold than the original.
Devlin is a perfect country star. Her versatile, distinctive vocals fit the genre faultlessly, and her playful lyrics land between Dolly, Shania and The Chicks. Unafraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, she confronts her demons with real wit and lets her heart pour out in some real tender emotional moments.
