Silver Screen Weekly - What's Coming Up At The Cinema From Friday 22nd March

Our film critic and media correspondent has been looking and trawling the new releases. Here's what you can see on the big screen this week.

From Friday 22nd March

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (12a)
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the perfect kick-off to this school holiday week! Following 2021's Afterlife, Frozen Empire crosses the streams of old and new for this beloved franchise, as the Spengler family returns to the iconic Ghostbusters firehouse HQ in New York City to help the original Ghostbusters team take down a chilly new paranormal foe that has escaped and threatens to scare the city to death, by coating it in an icy evil blast of ghostly menace. A treat for fans of the original films, as well as the start of a bright new future for the series, director Gil Kenan's film is one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year and is chock full of laughs, spooky thrills and heart. Starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim and original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson & Annie Potts. This bustin' really will make you feel good.

Late Night with the Devil (18)
One of the indie horror breakouts of the year, Late Night with the Devil is a found footage delight, that is presented as the recovered master tape of a late night variety and talk show, filmed on Halloween night in 1977, when an interview with a psychologist and her young subject, the sole survivor of a Satanic church mass suicide, goes very very wrong! Being called frightening, inventive and a modern horror masterwork, Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes’ film features an outstanding lead performance by David Dastmalchian as the host of this ill-fated show, and is a film that even the legendary Stephen King has proclaimed is a new classic.

From Wednesday 27th March

Mothers’ Instinct (15)
Director Benoît Delholmme’s drama thriller is driven by two powerhouse lead performances by Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. The film follows two housewives, who are the best of friends, but their bond becomes increasingly fractured after a tragic accident, and paranoia, guilt and suspicion begins to uncontrollably take over. A psychological tour de force, Mothers’ Instinct is a ‘60s set film that will engross and shock in equal measure.

From Thursday 28th March

Kung Fu Panda 4 (PG)
The fourth and perhaps final entry in Dreamworks’ hit animated franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4 sees Jack Black back in action as the voice of Dragon Warrior Po, who must try and find his new successor but has a mighty fight on his hands in the form of an evil sorceress, The Chameleon (Viola Davis). Visually stunning and with the series’ trademark humour and likeable characters, as well as some surprises for longtime fans, Kung Fu Panda 4 is a knockout and a spin-kicking treat for the whole family this holiday. Co-starring Awkwafina, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Ian McShane, Bryan Cranston and Ke Huy Quan.
