Northern Gas Networks Launches 2026 Apprenticeship Programme To Break Stereotypes And Open Up Careers Across The North

Northern Gas Networks Apprenticeships
Northern Gas Networks Apprenticeships
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has launched its 2026 apprenticeship programme, encouraging people across the North of England to start a career in energy — no matter their background.

The campaign challenges outdated perceptions of who works in the industry, making it clear that you don’t need to fit a stereotype to succeed. Whether leaving school, changing direction or looking for a more hands-on career, NGN’s apprenticeships offer the opportunity to earn while you learn, gain recognised qualifications and build a long-term future.

With roles available across Yorkshire, the North East and northern Cumbria, the programme creates opportunities for people to train, develop and work in the communities they live in — while playing a vital role in keeping homes safe, warm and connected.

Opening doors to new opportunities

Apprenticeships at NGN combine practical, on-the-job experience with structured training and ongoing support from experienced colleagues.

From day one, apprentices are embedded into operational teams, building skills, confidence and real-world experience that set them up for long-term careers in the energy sector.

Opportunities are available in NGN’s Services Beyond the Meter (SBM) and Electrical & Instrumentation teams — offering varied, hands-on roles that make a genuine difference every day.

Breaking the stereotype

For too long, careers in engineering and the energy sector have been shaped by outdated assumptions about who belongs.

NGN is actively working to change that — creating an apprenticeship programme that removes barriers, builds confidence and opens up opportunities to a wider and more diverse range of people.

The organisation is particularly keen to attract more women into engineering roles, alongside anyone who may not have previously considered a career in the industry.

What matters most is curiosity, motivation and a willingness to learn.

Careers that make a real difference

NGN’s apprenticeships offer more than just technical training — they provide the chance to make a tangible difference in communities across the North.

In Services Beyond the Meter roles, apprentices support customers in urgent situations — responding to gas emergencies, making homes safe and providing reassurance when it matters most. They also help connect eligible customers to support for repairs or replacements, ensuring they are not left without heating or hot water.

In Electrical & Instrumentation roles, apprentices work on the systems that power and protect the network, gaining specialist skills while maintaining critical infrastructure.

A long-term investment in people

Apprenticeships remain central to NGN’s commitment to developing talent and building a fairer, greener future for the region.

Apprenticeships are absolutely vital to the future of Northern Gas Networks and the energy industry as a whole. They allow people to gain valuable skills, earn while they learn, and build confidence in a supportive environment — regardless of background or prior experience.

We know there is incredible untapped talent out there, particularly among women and those who may not have previously considered a career in our industry. This programme is about opening doors, breaking down stereotypes and giving people the opportunity to build a secure, meaningful and long-term career with us.
