North East School Makes National Finals Of The Big Bang Competition

Students from Corbridge Middle School, based in Northumberland, are among the 52 projects to make it to the national Finals of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.

The Big Bang Competition recognises and rewards young people’s science and engineering project work. Finalists have the opportunity to win a range of prizes and could be crowned UK Young Engineer and UK Young Scientist of the Year with a prize of £2000.

Corbridge Middle School have made the finals with their project ‘Energy Sources for a Resilient Community’. This physics project combines the themes of climate change, energy and sustainability, and the students set out to investigate solar energy and biogas as 2 possible energy sources for a resilient community.

The students became interested in energy resilience as they came to understand that burning fossil fuels led to climate breakdown. They recognised the excellent sources of renewable energy that are available and began to investigate the production of solar energy using photovoltaic cells and the production of biogas from a waste digester. The students created a model village to show what their resilient community could look like, and since finishing their Bronze Crest Award they have become even more concerned about energy resilience. They believe there is a bright future but only if we keep fossil fuels in the ground.

The Big Bang Competition judges and moderators were extremely impressed with the creativity and innovation shown to solve real-world projects shown by all the young people who participated. Approximately 200 projects have been entered the Competition this year.

The winners of The Big Bang Competition will be announced at the Award Ceremony at The Big Bang Fair on Wednesday 22 June at the NEC in Birmingham.

The Fair runs from Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 and is fully booked for schools during the day. However, families are welcome to join the largest celebration of STEM for young people in the UK on Thursday 23 June from 4 to 8pm at Big Bang Unlocked.

Free to attend and aimed at 11- to 14-year-olds, it includes inspirational talks, interactive workshops, and hands-on exhibits and careers information from STEM professionals. Young people and teachers can also join virtually through Big Bang Digital.

Good luck to Corbridge Middle School!
