New Chancellor Of Teesside University Is Officially Installed

In a formal ceremony attended by university staff, students and civic representatives from across the Tees Valley, Baroness Jenny Chapman of Darlington was appointed as the University’s first female chancellor.

Baroness Chapman, a prominent campaigner for social mobility and the positive impact of quality higher education, said she was looking forward to supporting the University’s mission to transform lives and economies.

Baroness Chapman, said:
“It has been a real honour for me to be here today with my friends and family.

“Teesside University has a reputation for delivering real impact, addressing societal challenges and supporting economic growth through its industry-relevant teaching and research.

“I am eager to work alongside the Vice-Chancellor and University Executive Team to support them in their ambitious plans for the University.”


Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Paul Croney OBE, added:
“We are delighted to welcome Baroness Chapman as Teesside University’s new Chancellor.

“As someone who has devoted her career to fighting for social justice and speaking up for the people of this region, her support will be invaluable as we continue to address the challenges of today and generate positive change.

“I am looking forward to working together on advancing our joint goals and supporting our ambition to be a high-performing, global university.”

The installation ceremony was presided over by Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors, Ada Burns, who added: “Baroness Chapman’s passion for education has been a catalyst throughout her career, and to have her as part of our university community is hugely positive.

“She is a driving force for the region and will be a superb advocate for our university.”


Baroness Jenny Chapman was the member of parliament for her hometown of Darlington between 2010 and 2019, during which time she served on the Labour front benches as Shadow Minister for Prisons, Shadow Minister for Childcare and Early Years and Shadow Minister for Exiting the European Union.

In 2020, she was made a life peer and sits in the House of Lords as the Opposition Cabinet Spokesperson, as well as Shadow Minister of State at the Cabinet Office.

Throughout her career, Baroness Chapman has been a committed champion for the Tees Valley and campaigner for quality education, speaking in the Houses of Parliament on issues including student fees and the positive impact of universities within their local communities.
