Interview With Brooke Law

Singer songwriter Brooke Law recently released her new song We All Need Saving within Mental Health Awareness Week (9-15 May 2022), writing about how our mental health was affected during the pandemic lockdown. As she starts to build towards live shows, we caught up with her to find out what inspired her to write the release.

Hi Brooke, first of all, how are you?

I’m really good thank you, so excited to be playing festivals soon!

We are loving We All Need Saving, can you tell us a little more about the writing and recording process...

I wrote it with my friend Kath Haling, we got talking about our own struggles and how a lot of people struggled especially during covid. The song is about recognising that we all need help sometimes and asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. It's important to look after and listen to each other, and we never know when a smile or kind gesture is going to pull someone back from the edge.

The song speaks of the importance of looking after each other. What inspired you?

It really made me feel better through speaking with my cowriting friend, the idea of having somebody there to help you through something inspired us.

You released the song for Mental Health Awareness Week, what are your personal recommendations for maintaining positive mental health?

I work as a nursery teacher and I find acting like a child and feeling silly makes be super happy.

Your sound could be bracketed into a few genres, is that a conscious decision?

Yes and no, my music has changed and matured over time and working with various producers has influenced me also. I’ve always loved playing live and feel thats when my style really comes out so I kind of decided, I need to bring the live instruments into the tracks and this is how my music formed. If you go back on my Spotify catalogue my sound is completely different.

If you had to define it yourself, what would you call it?

Kind of raw, gutsy, country rock

And you have to file yourself between two artists, who would they be?

Alanis Morissette and Janis Joplin

We spotted that you have a few shows coming up - tell us more...

I’m finally playing festivals this year with band, we’ve got Buckle and Boots, Cornbury and The British Country Music Festival.

What is the Brooke Law live experience?

For me it’s the best thing ever ha, but I hope people get taken on a journey through all sorts of emotions.

Lastly, you have previously written with Ben from The Shires. Who is your dream collaborator?

I loved working with Ben and so many other amazing writer’s too. Gosh there’s so many musicians I’d love to collaborate with… today I’m gonna say PINK
