Interview
In Conversation With Kim Wilde
Kim Wilde has had an enviable career. After being the most charted solo female artist in the UK in the 1980s, she went on to become an award-winning gardener. She was a constant presence on the live circuit before returning to chat with 2018's Here Come The Aliens. With Cherry Red celebrating her back catalogue over the coming months, she returns next year with her latest studio album and a UK tour. We caught up with her to learn more.

Hi Kim, How are you?
I’m really excited about this new phase of my career where the past and the present collide in the most fabulous way.
Once again, you are embarking on a journey. What can we expect from the tour?
We are celebrating my original
Close album from 1988, including every song from that album in one way or another, as well as the greatest hits and selections from
Closer, my new album.
You have a huge, diverse back catalogue. How do you approach choosing a set list?
We know the audience wants to hear the best-known songs, and we love to play those for them, but there are many songs we choose because they sound so great live. But it's always a challenge as we make more music, which is a nice problem to have.

What is the secret to a good show?
It’s prioritising direct communication with the audience in whatever way you can. After you have covered the bases, which are great sound, great lights, great musicians, and great songs... Experience plays a large hand.
Do you prefer tours or festivals?
I have no preference. They both have beautiful audiences who always make it worthwhile.
Do you have to approach them differently?
There are subtle differences in the set list sometimes, but there are more similarities than differences.
Who is the best live performer you have seen?
I saw Prince when I was in Los Angeles promoting
You Keep Me Hangin On, which became the number one song in America. I’m a huge Prince fan.
What is your favourite stage?
Tivoli in Utrecht is always very special. Koko in London, La Cigale in Paris, Capitol in Hannover, and the Enmore Theatre in Sydney are also a few of my favourite stages.
Is there a venue you want to tick off your to-do list?
Radio City in New York would be a blast!
It has been 6 years since your last album; can we expect new material soon?
Yes…
Closer, my new album is coming at the end of January, and there could be some singles before that!
And can you tell us all about your Cherry Red Records re-releases?
I’m really chuffed that my old music is reaching new audiences and still being appreciated all these years later. It’s a testament to a deep love for pop music that has endured over the years. Cherry Red are the leaders in doing fantastic re-releases of classic albums, and we’re so glad to be working with them. September will see the release of
Love Moves, Now and Forever, and
Love Is. There’s also picture disc versions and my Greatest Hits album!
Kim Wilde
Are there any missed singles?
Probably if you ask my fans, they could give you a long list, but we’re happy with our choices.
Lastly, if you could team up with one person to enter the Christmas chart race this year, who would you choose?
I love Christmas, and we’re touring our Christmas Acoustic show again this year, but in Switzerland and Germany.
My Wilde Winter Songbook album is still such a wonderful moment for me, and we love those tours. I’d be happy to hold anyone's hand while singing Christmas songs!
