In Conversation: Rubberband Girl
Rubberband Girl’s debut single South Suburban Weekend earned their first wave of discovery, with tastemaker attention from Notion, Women in Pop, and House of Solo adding to previous positive comparisons to Susanne Sundfør and Kate Bush. There’s now much more to come from Rubberband Girl—founded and fronted by Caitlyn Scarlett—as she unleashes her debut album. We caught up with her to find out more.
Rubberband Girl
Hi, how are you?
I’m very well; thanks for asking!
For those not in the know, tell us a little more about Rubberband Girl.
Rubberband Girl is a band/project I started during COVID lockdown 2020 after experiencing major burnout and writer’s block as a result of years writing for the pop industry. It's an authentic reflection of my influences and experiences, and it has been a great source of happiness and inspiration for me to create. Now, four years later, I’m finally opening up to the world, and our debut album is coming out this month.
We are very excited for your album, Profiterole Vision. What was the writing and recording process like?
It was lengthy, relaxed, and very free. The great thing about making this album was that no one knew about it, so the process revolved entirely around the idea of “art for art’s sake." I called in a lot of favours with long-time friends and collaborators, and we wrote music that excited us in a way that felt fresh yet nostalgic. It’s been heartwarming for me to see how people have taken to this project and its ethos.
If you had to identify your three key influences, who are they?
When discussing Rubberband Girl, three artists who come up often are Cheryl Crow, Lily Allen, and Kate Bush. A golden trifecta if you ask me!
And if you had to file it between two other albums, what records would they be?
Hmm, maybe
Alright, Still, and
Tuesday Night Music Club.
You have released a series of singles to tease the album; which one were you most excited to release?
South Suburban Weekend is very special to me, and I was so excited and proud to share it. I still am. To me, it’s one of those rare songs as a writer where you can look back and think, “I can’t believe I made that.”.
Rubberband Girl
Which song are you most excited for people to hear?
All of them, honestly. The album is 10 tracks, making the whole thing just under 40 minutes long, and that took a lot of restraint because we have accumulated so much material over the last few years. But I wanted the project to be concise, with every song feeling like a standout track in a way that values the listener's time and leaves them wanting more.
Do you have any touring plans?
We have our first few shows coming up in October, and we are eager to play far and wide, so yes, touring is on the cards.
If you have one ambition for the record, what would it be?
That it finds its people, whoever and wherever they are.
