Cumbria/North Lancashire Roadworks Monday 25 To Sunday 31 January 2021

The following summary of planned new and ongoing roadworks over the coming week is correct as of Friday 22 January 2021 but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

Drivers looking for roadworks information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com Some of the larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: https://highwaysengland.co.uk/regions/north-west

A full list of roadworks involving carriageway closures is also Tweeted each Monday via regional Twitter feed @highwaysNWest.

Roadworks affect all journeys which is why it is important they are completed as quickly as possible. All our sites have strict safeguarding measures to prevent the spread of COVID19 and none of our sites are open to the public.

M6 between junctions 41 and 42

A five-week maintenance project focusing on the pedestrian bridge linking the northbound and southbound motorway service areas is starting on Monday (25 January). Work is taking place on both sides of the carriageway and will be carried out under lane closures and a 50mph to 40mph stepped speed restriction. The will be no overtaking for vehicles over two metres wide. The footbridge will remain open at all times but there will be occasional overnight closures of the service area slip roads.

M6 between junctions 42 and 43

Highways England are renewing the central reservation safety barrier of the motorway in a 12-week project which will start on Monday 11 January. Traffic management includes narrow lane running, a temporary barrier and a 50mph speed limit. They will also be taking the opportunity of round-the-clock lane closures and some 8pm to 6am overnight carriageway closures to add extra protection to bridge supports along the motorway. Full carriageway closures are planned for (22 January, southbound) and Sunday night (northbound) to resurface the carriageway. The diversion route is via the A69 and A689.

M55 cyclical maintenance

Four nights of 8pm to 6am overnight maintenance at Broughton interchange, where the M55 meets junction 32 of the M6, was due to start last weekend (on Saturday 16 January) but was affected by severe weather. Last weekend’s planned link road closures will now take place next weekend (see below). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place using the M6 or A6 at junction 1 of the M55. Sections of the route will be closed overnight including:

Tomorrow and Sunday (23 and 24 January) – eastbound link roads from the M55 onto the southbound and northbound M6
Saturday 30 January (was Saturday 16 January) – link road from northbound M6 onto westbound M55
Sunday 31 January (was Sunday 17 January) – link road from southbound M6 onto westbound M55

M55 junctions 1 to 3

Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit are now in place along a short stretch of the motorway where a new junction (junction 2) is being constructed as part of Lancashire County Council’s Preston Western Distributor road project. More information is available here: https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/council/strategies-policies-plans/roads-parking-and-travel/major-transport-schemes/preston-western-distributor/

A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool improvement

Work to deliver a £150 million new bypass and junction improvements is now underway. Regular traffic management updates will be posted here. Anyone interested in the project can visit the project webpage at https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/a585-windy-harbour-to-skippool/

A6 Pinelake Roundabout

Between Monday and Sunday (25 to 31 January) we’ll be working overnight – 8pm to 6am - at Pinelake roundabout on the A6. This is to remove traffic management associated with the recent A590 Brettargh Holt resurfacing works. A signed diversion will be in place.

A590 Newby Bridge

As part of the £8 million programme of work along the route this financial year Highways England are starting 8pm to 6am overnight work on an important, three-week safety scheme at Newby Bridge from Monday 8 February. They are spending £150,000 on the project on junction adjustments to stop people turning right onto the westbound A590 from Lakeside (the junction near the Swan Hotel). The junction improvements entail widening the carriageway, installing a new traffic island and signs, and replacing the road markings. Temporary three-way traffic signals will be in place during the work (weekdays only).

A590 Cross-a-Moor

Preparatory work is now underway near Swarthmoor west of Ulverston where a brand new £7 million roundabout is being constructed - replacing the current staggered junction between Main Road and Pennington Lane.
